Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery – Phase 5 A & B Expansion

St. Louis, Missouri · $13,404,320 Contract · Completed November 2021 · RKE as Prime Contractor
Project Overview

Scope & Delivery

This project consisted of the development of approximately 13 acres of land, transferred by the adjacent medical center, at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. The development included 15,673 gravesites (casket and cremation), comprising 14,206 pre-placed crypts and 1,467 in-ground cremains across two phases. Phase 5A used one acre for nearly 924 pre-placed crypts and was designated for early turnover; Phase 5B expanded over five acres and provided around 5,324 burial sites (4,632 pre-placed crypts and 692 in-ground cremains).

The project required extensive earthwork, including excavation, repair of subgrade, and embankment with cohesive and pervious fills. It also included a restroom facility, extended roadways, site utilities, lighting, signage, and GPS/GIS; drilled shafts with enclosed H-piles; roadway excavation and backfill; geogrid; extensive storm drainage (precast manholes, RCP pipe, riprap, and bioretention basins); utility relocation; significant landscaping and irrigation; construction of a retaining wall; and stone masonry.
